Born in Ulverston, Jess Gillam has achieved remarkable success in the world of music. She made history as the first saxophonist to reach the finals of BBC Young Musician. Gillam’s musical journey began at the Royal Northern College of Music while she was still in secondary school. Since then, she has made significant strides in her career, becoming the youngest-ever presenter on Radio 3 and securing the distinction of being the first saxophonist signed to Decca Classics. Her weekly radio show on BBC Radio 3, titled ‘This Classical Life,’ has further solidified her presence in the classical music world.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to music, Jess Gillam was honored with an MBE in the 2021 Birthday Honors. She has also received a Classic BRIT award, and her debut album, ‘Rise,’ released in 2019, earned a place in The Times Top 100 Albums of the Year. Gillam’s collaboration with the Manchester Camerata celebrated their 50th anniversary.
In 2020, she followed her debut album with another release, ‘Time.’ This year, Gillam’s musical journey took her to the Aspen Music Festival in Aspen, Colorado, where she also played a role in presenting the BBC Proms.
Notably, Jess Gillam made a guest appearance alongside comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan on their TV show ‘Rob & Romesh vs.’ In the fourth episode of the fifth series, she took on the role of guiding Rob and Romesh in their quest to become classical music maestros as they joined the world-famous London Philharmonic Orchestra.
