Steel Drum Nights Unite Blue Hill Community Through Music and Charity

by Madonna

Every Monday evening from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Blue Hill Town Park comes alive with the vibrant sounds of steel drums as “Flash! in the Pans,” the area’s cherished community steel drum band, hosts its high-energy summer dances.

Comprised of volunteer musicians spanning from teenagers to seniors, “Flash! in the Pans” is far more than a band—it’s a symbol of community spirit. Musicians of all experience levels come together to celebrate their shared love for rhythm, music, and connection.

These lively Monday night events are open to everyone and run on a donation basis, with all proceeds benefiting a rotating lineup of local charities. The family-friendly performances typically take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m., primarily in Blue Hill Town Park, although a few shows are held at various locations throughout Downeast Maine.

A particular favorite among local teens, the dances have become an essential part of summer life in Blue Hill. “It’s more than just a concert,” shared one regular attendee. “It’s a tradition that brings the whole community together.”

Martin Conte, the band’s director, also fosters musical talent in local youth by leading steel bands at George Stevens Academy and nearby elementary schools, aiming to instill a lifelong appreciation for music from an early age.
