A new documentary series by British filmmaker Simon Alkin explores the groundbreaking journey of Eddie Van Halen and his invention of the two-handed tapping technique that forever changed the landscape of rock guitar. The free video series features interviews with band members and prominent figures in the music industry and follows the recent discovery and release of never-before-seen footage from a Van Halen film shot in the 1980s.
The story begins in 1977, during the band’s struggle to land a record deal. Producer Ted Templeman played a crucial role in getting Warner Bros. to sign Van Halen, driven entirely by Eddie’s exceptional skill. In an interview with Guitar World, Templeman recalled, “I didn’t care about anybody else. I just wanted that genius to be recognized by the world.”
One of the documentary’s key focuses is the creation of the iconic track “Eruption.” Originally intended as a warm-up routine, the piece caught Templeman’s attention, who insisted it be included on the band’s debut album in 1978. The track, recorded in a single take, became a defining moment not only for Van Halen but for rock guitar as a whole. While the two-handed tapping technique had existed before, Eddie Van Halen elevated it to new heights, shaping the sound of a generation.
The band recorded their debut album in just five days, a testament to their raw energy and precision. The documentary also sheds light on the internal dynamics of the band, particularly their early naiveté about the music business. David Lee Roth humorously remarks that producer Templeman still earns more from their first two albums than he does.
Alkin’s series dives into both the triumphs and tensions that defined the band’s early years. It portrays Eddie Van Halen as a visionary who frequently clashed with engineers and producers in pursuit of what he described as “sound chasing.” For Eddie, it was never just about playing guitar—it was about shaping sound itself. “It always comes through me. I’m the spark plug and the engine, so it is kind of a burden, but it’s a challenge at the same time,” he said, reflecting on his pivotal role in the band.
This installment forms part of Alkin’s broader series on Van Halen, offering fans and music lovers a deeper understanding of how Eddie Van Halen’s relentless pursuit of innovation helped revolutionize modern guitar playing.
