Grez Guitars Unveils the Grand Tour Bass: A Modern Classic with Vintage Soul

by Madonna

Grez Guitars has officially launched the Grez Grand Tour Bass, a short scale semi-hollow carve-top bass guitar, available in a 4-string format. Designed in close collaboration with acclaimed bassist Ian Martin Allison, the new model continues the brand’s tradition of blending vintage inspiration with modern craftsmanship.

The Grand Tour Bass draws from the aesthetics and character of classic instruments from the 1950s and 60s, reimagined through a contemporary lens. Built with a carved spruce top and a Honduran mahogany body and neck, the instrument features a 30-inch scale and a Macassar ebony fretboard with a 12” radius and 21 jumbo frets. It comes fitted with a Halon bridge, a Grez string anchor, and La Bella Deep Talkin’ long scale 45-105 flatwound strings. The electronic configuration includes Curtis Novak Bisonic/Darkstar pickups with coil tap functionality for tonal versatility.

Finished in a sleek nitrocellulose lacquer and offered in multiple colors, the Grand Tour Bass balances form and function. Barry Grzebik, founder of Grez Guitars, highlighted the philosophy behind the instrument’s design: “I love the process of designing instruments—bringing together acoustical, electrical, visual, and ergonomic engineering with both industrial and artistic design. This bass balances a strong acoustic voice with the durability needed for touring and high-volume performances. And even though it’s a short scale, the extended string after-length allows it to use standard long scale strings, opening up more options for players.”

Ian Martin Allison also shared his thoughts on the project: “I’ve always been inspired by the unique tone of vintage hollow and semi-hollow basses, but they often fall short in terms of modern standards for playability, reliability, and quality. I’m proud to have been part of developing something that truly delivers on all fronts.”
