Violent Femmes Add Bass Drum After Four Decades—But Only on Probation

by Madonna

After 44 years of sticking to their minimalist roots, legendary folk-punk band Violent Femmes announced Thursday that they’ve finally added a bass drum to their setup—at least for now.

The band, famously known for their stripped-down percussion style using only a snare drum and, on occasion, a 22” Weber Kettle Grill, revealed they picked up a used bass drum from Rick’s Music and Christmas Shoppe on Brady Street. Sources close to the group say the decision was met with cautious optimism.

“This is just a trial. We got a great deal on it, and it’s refundable within 30 days,” explained guitarist and lead songwriter Gordon Gano. “Since we’re heading out on tour, and already traveling with pricey violins and upright basses, we figured it wouldn’t hurt to let John try it out. He’s been on good behavior. But if he starts getting too carried away—like hitting it more than once every four beats—we’re taking it back. And maybe him, too.”

John Sparrow, the group’s drummer since 2005 (on and off), was visibly enthusiastic about the addition.

“This opens up so much for me,” said Sparrow. “Instead of my usual snare brushing and striking on two and four, I can now add a ‘dum’ between them. Picture ‘brush-dum-BAP.’ That bass drum could really change the way songs like ‘Add It Up’ or ‘Blister in the Sun’ hit. Honestly, this might be the beginning of a new chapter for me as a drummer.”

While the Femmes explore this sonic evolution, others in the music industry offered advice—if not caution. Danielle Haim, lead singer and songwriter of sister band HAIM, suggested keeping expectations in check.

“Be very careful with what you give a drummer,” Haim warned. “Once they get a taste, they start asking for more—like toms, bus seats, or beds at hotels. The second mine gets bold, I just switch him out for a drum machine and let him sit and reflect.”

As of press time, Gano was reportedly overheard denying Sparrow’s hopeful request for a cymbal.
