Monmouth came alive on May 4 with the official unveiling of The People’s Piano, a public tribute placed beneath the arches of Agincourt Square.
Mayor of Monmouth, Councillor David Evans, led the ceremony by cutting the ribbon and delivering a moving speech in memory of the late Paul and Rick Martinez—renowned musicians whose legacy inspired the installation.
The Martinez Brothers Music Foundation, created following the brothers’ passing, aims to foster musical opportunities and creativity in their honour. The People’s Piano marks the foundation’s inaugural project. The piano will remain in Agincourt Square and be open to all visitors during Shire Hall’s operating hours through at least September.
The event featured performances by a host of talented local musicians, including Katie Pritchard, Feliks Tabis, Richie Persell, and Osian Jones.
Susie Martinez, speaking on behalf of the foundation, expressed her gratitude: “We really hoped people would just turn up and play—and they are. This is what the people’s piano is all about. We are so grateful for everyone’s support, friendships, and donations, and we look forward to more and more music in the town.”
To extend its impact, the foundation has partnered with the iconic Rockfield Studios in Monmouth to support a music masterclass program for young people.
Monmouth Town Council has backed the initiative with a grant, supplemented by a contribution from the Mayor’s civic expenses.
Mayor Evans added, “The People’s Piano is an opportunity for anyone to come try music; music lifts the soul.”
Paul and Rick Martinez both enjoyed vibrant musical careers. Paul performed with legends such as Cat Stevens and George Harrison, and even played with Led Zeppelin during the 1985 Live Aid concert. He was also a member of Robert Plant’s band, notably featuring on the successful single Big Log. Rick, meanwhile, was a dynamic session drummer who played with bands like The Adverts and Hawkwind.
The People’s Piano now stands as a permanent symbol of their shared passion and legacy, inviting the community to keep music alive in Monmouth.
