Kirk Hammett Praises Young Guitarists, Admits He “Should Be a Lot Better” in Humble Reflection

by Madonna

Kirk Hammett, the legendary guitarist of Metallica, has always been known for his down-to-earth nature, and he recently demonstrated this once again in an interview with Metal Hammer. In a conversation about the newer generation of guitar players, Hammett expressed his admiration for their impressive skills while acknowledging the challenges they face in today’s world.

“I see a lot of [people on YouTube] and I’m frigging impressed,” Hammett shared. “There are some amazing players out there, where I’m just shaking my head like, ‘Why aren’t these guys working? Why aren’t they recording?’ But then I think… maybe they can’t. Maybe they have jobs, or families, or something they can’t leave behind.”

His thoughtful reflection highlights the reality many young musicians face today, balancing their dreams with the need to make a living in a difficult economic environment.

Hammett also took a moment to turn the spotlight on his own playing, admitting that despite his iconic status, he feels he could have improved more over the years. “I should be a lot better than I am,” he said. “I see some of these younger guitar players and I’m like, ‘Where did I go wrong?’ Ha ha!”

When discussing his unique playing style, Hammett emphasized the personal connection he strives for with his music. “It’s hard for me to be objective or subjective for where I stand in all of this,” he said. “I just know that I like playing the way I do; I know if I keep on playing from my cajónes, somebody is going to be able to relate to that.”

Hammett explained that he’s not interested in showing off with complex techniques or flashy displays. “I don’t need to show off or get egotistical by being like, ‘Hey, check out this three-octave arpeggio with tapping in the middle.’ I can’t be bothered! I have a bombastic way of playing – I’ve always been that way, even when I was just in my room.”

It’s refreshing to see such a massive rock star stay grounded and humble, especially since not many can claim to be playing guitar for Metallica.

Currently, Hammett and Metallica are on their M72 World Tour, with support acts such as Pantera, Suicidal Tendencies, Ice Nine Kills, and Limp Bizkit. The tour continues through June 29.
