Wrocław Set to Host Thousands of Guitarists in Annual Hendrix Tribute and Record-Breaking Attempt

by Madonna

Thousands of guitarists are expected to gather in Wrocław, Poland, on Thursday for the city’s annual attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest guitar ensemble performing Jimi Hendrix’s iconic hit “Hey Joe.” The event, which takes place in the city’s market square, is part of the Thanks Jimi Festival, an ongoing tribute to the legendary guitarist who passed away in 1970.

This year’s gathering is once again aiming to beat the current record of 7,967 guitarists, which was set in Wrocław in 2023. Last year’s turnout of 7,531 participants came close but fell just short. The event has consistently attracted a wide range of guitar lovers, from casual players to internationally known musicians.

Among the performers expected this year are American guitarists LeBurn Maddox and Al Anderson, joining a long list of renowned artists who have graced the event in past years. Previous editions have welcomed names like Chris Jagger (brother of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger), Phil Bates from the UK, and Neil Zaza from the U.S.

The Thanks Jimi Festival has grown significantly since its inception in 2003, when Polish musician Leszek Cichoński first organized a group of 588 guitarists to perform together in a spontaneous tribute inspired by a blues workshop jam session. That humble beginning has since transformed into one of the most celebrated public music gatherings in Europe.

Throughout its history, the festival has also featured guest appearances by world-renowned guitarists such as Al Di Meola and Scott Henderson, and musicians from iconic bands like Status Quo and Dire Straits.

Whether the record is broken this year or not, Wrocław’s celebration of Jimi Hendrix continues to serve as a powerful symbol of unity, musical passion, and the enduring legacy of rock history.
