John Stamos recently proved he’s not one to shy away from a challenge in a new video from the popular YouTube channel Drumeo. In the clip, the actor and musician was invited to take part in the “For the First Time” challenge — a segment where drummers are asked to perform along to a track they’ve never heard before, with the drum section removed.
This time, the chosen song was none other than “Last Resort” by Papa Roach.
While the iconic nu metal anthem from 2000 might be deeply familiar to many Millennials — its music video has racked up over 280 million views on YouTube — Stamos admitted he had never heard it before. And yes, the internet collectively gasped.
As part of the challenge, Stamos listened to the track a few times with no drum track, before stepping behind the kit to create his own version. With host Brandon Toews watching, Stamos embraced the intimidating task with a mix of humor and determination.
“Let me tell every drummer who ever gets the chance to do this — don’t,” he joked to the camera. “It’s intimidating, but, f*** it.”
Despite the difficulty and high energy of the song, Stamos powered through, improvising his way through the track’s relentless pace. When he finished, soaked in sweat and visibly spent, it was clear he had impressed the crew.
After the performance, Stamos asked if the song was by Ozzy Osbourne. Toews clarified that it was by Papa Roach and that the original drum part was performed by Dave Buckner. Both agreed that Stamos’ rendition was remarkably close to the original.
“That was pretty cool!” Stamos said, catching his breath. “I think I barely lived through it… I survived.”
Though best known for his acting roles, particularly on Full House, Stamos is no stranger to music. He’s an accomplished drummer who has played with legendary artists such as The Beach Boys, BB King, and Bruce Springsteen.
