Actor John Stamos recently rose to the challenge of playing Papa Roach’s signature song “Last Resort” on drums — despite hearing it for the very first time — and earned plenty of praise for his performance.
Stamos participated in the latest edition of Drumeo’s popular “For the First Time” series, where drummers attempt to perform songs they’ve never heard before. Remarkably, the Full House star had never encountered “Last Resort”, even mistakenly asking at one point if the song was by Ozzy Osbourne.
Unlike previous episodes usually filmed at Drumeo’s studio, this installment saw host Brandon Toews visiting Stamos at his home, where the actor keeps a full drum kit ready. Stamos, who’s far from a beginner on drums, has regularly played with The Beach Boys and performed alongside greats like B.B. King, Tom Jones, John Fogerty, and Bruce Springsteen.
Toews first played “Last Resort” without the drum track, confirming that Stamos had no familiarity with the song. Stamos took a few attempts at drumming along, during which his wife and son amusingly passed through the room, covering their ears.
With a few coaching tips from Toews, Stamos refined his approach, and his final take showed strong drumming instincts and musicality. Fans flooded the YouTube comments with praise, one writing, “Personally, I don’t think it’s fair that John Stamos is this talented AND handsome. Really couldn’t have the decency to be only one.”
At the end of the session, a sweaty and exhausted Stamos joked, “I would tell every drummer that ever gets a chance to do this, ‘Don’t!’” However, he quickly added, “No, this was cool. Gimme another one.” Toews teased, “Get ready for Meshuggah meets John Stamos,” prompting the actor to laugh and ask, “What’s Meshuggah?”
Meanwhile, Papa Roach is preparing to continue their busy year, with festival dates scheduled in Canada and Europe this summer. They will also kick off the second leg of their co-headlining U.S. tour with Rise Against in September.
