Sebsongs has unveiled the Modular Rhythmatic, a compact 16HP module that brings the classic sound of a Roland CR-78-inspired analog drum machine to Eurorack systems. Unlike traditional modular setups, which often require multiple modules for each drum voice, the Rhythmatic offers a complete drum machine in a much smaller and more space-efficient form.
This module features six drum voices derived from the iconic Roland CR-78, including bass drum, snare drum, low conga, rim shot, hi-hat, and cymbal. Unlike the original CR-78, Sebsongs has enhanced the module by adding adjustable tune and decay controls for both the bass drum and snare drum, along with a decay control for the cymbal. This allows for more customization of the sounds compared to its vintage predecessor.
The Rhythmatic module is equipped with a built-in sequencer capable of programming 64 drum patterns, each up to 16 steps in length. The sequencer offers flexibility by allowing each drum voice to have a different sequence length, which enables the creation of polymetric rhythms. Additionally, the module comes preloaded with 64 patterns, many of which are taken directly from the original CR-78, giving users an easy starting point for their rhythms.
Sebsongs has also incorporated some innovative features aimed at enhancing the creative process. One such feature is the random parameter control, which allows users to add or subtract steps from the pre-programmed patterns using a large knob. This function can be a particularly useful tool for live performances, offering an element of unpredictability. When holding the shift button, the random knob transforms into a four-bar loop recorder, capturing pattern changes and movements in real-time. To further facilitate live interaction, the Rhythmatic includes mute buttons for each individual drum voice.
Although the Rhythmatic functions as a standalone drum machine, it also offers flexibility for those who prefer using external trigger sequencers. Each drum voice has a dedicated jack that can be configured as either an external trigger input or a trigger output from the built-in sequencer, turning the Rhythmatic into a functional trigger sequencer as well.
For I/O options, the module provides external clock and reset inputs, CV inputs for pattern and random parameters, and two dedicated audio outputs. The first output delivers the mixed signal of all six voices, while the second splits the voices between two outputs, offering additional routing possibilities.
At a size of just 16HP, the Sebsongs Modular Rhythmatic may have some limitations in terms of voice tweakability compared to a full drum machine setup. However, its compact design and efficient feature set make it a compelling option for musicians seeking to add a versatile, CR-78-inspired drum machine to their Eurorack system. The Rhythmatic is available for £300 (excluding VAT) as an assembled version and £210 (excluding VAT) as a DIY kit from Thonk.
