For Deen Castronovo of Journey, the show must go on—even when the drums are on fire. The drummer revealed that a fire had been blazing beneath his drum kit for several songs during the band’s performance on March 14th at the Houston Livestock Show.
After only five songs, the show was abruptly cut short as the band rushed offstage and crew members quickly appeared with fire extinguishers. Moments later, the band returned to apologize, explaining that the performance had ended due to an “unforeseen electrical incident under the stage.” The crowd was evacuated, and no further music was played for the night.
Naturally, fans who had paid for tickets were upset, especially as there were no other scheduled dates at the time. Many felt they hadn’t received the show they paid for.
Though the band didn’t provide much detail to the disappointed crowd, Castronovo took to Instagram to share what had really happened. He wrote: “Hey, Houston! An act of God tonight! Fire broke out underneath the stage right under my drum riser!?? I was literally on fire for 4 ½ songs, all the power cables melted, and the show was a BUST! That doesn’t mean we won’t be back soon, because we love you all—and WE WILL RETURN! #dontstopbelievin God bless you all!”
Despite the early end to the show, fans continued to show support, expressing concern for the drummer’s safety and the condition of his drum kit. One fan commented, “Brother, Deen, I’m so glad y’all are ok. Hope it didn’t mess up anything on the new kit.”
It’s remarkable that Castronovo was able to continue playing for as long as he did with a fire beneath his kit. He must have been aware of the heat, but it didn’t seem to faze him as he powered through five songs.
As of now, there are no announcements regarding when the band will return to Houston, but fans are hopeful for a rescheduled performance. It’s likely that ticket holders will be offered some sort of compensation for the early show cancellation.
