Aline Homzy, a talented violinist and composer, will take the stage this week at Pesto’s in downtown Sudbury. Homzy, a Montreal native, was raised by a Quebecois mother and an American father with Eastern European roots, and her diverse cultural background deeply influences her original compositions.
According to concert organizers, her work is a reflection of the rich tapestry of her heritage. In addition to composing, Homzy is an accomplished session musician, regularly contributing her violin skills to recording projects in Toronto. She has worked with a variety of artists, showcasing her remarkable sight-reading abilities, vast knowledge of jazz and improvisation, and vibrant personality. These qualities have made her a sought-after talent in the music industry.
Homzy’s extensive resume includes collaborations with international artists such as Munir Hossn (Brazil), Emma Smith (Edinburgh), Jake Sherman (U.S.), and Ed Sheeran (UK). She has also performed at prestigious venues like Koerner Hall, Massey Hall, and The Glenn Gould Studio.
A passionate advocate for women in music, Homzy created the initiative Aline’s Etoile Magique in response to the underrepresentation of women in the improvised music scene. The project brought together some of Toronto’s top musicians, including Magdelys Savigne (OKAN), Anh Phung, and Emma Smith, to perform original music at the Canadian Music Centre.
Homzy’s commitment to the community grew from her experiences with the initiative, which made her more aware of how difficult it can be for low-income individuals and families to access the arts. As part of her concert priorities, she has made five tickets available to those in need. Additionally, she raised funds to ensure fair compensation for all the participating artists, addressing a crucial issue within the music community.
Homzy will perform at Pesto’s in the Radisson Hotel this Thursday at 6 p.m.
