The Vancouver Island Symphony is set to present a concert this weekend that celebrates beloved composers.
“Favourite Composers: Episode 2,” scheduled for Saturday, March 8 in Nanaimo, marks the continuation of a series the symphony began last season. The concert promises an evening of timeless masterpieces and stellar performances.
“It’s a great opportunity to share with the audience what they already know – pieces they love. And if they’re not familiar with the pieces, they’ll at least know the composers, so they can come with confidence that they will hear something they enjoy. It also gives us the chance to introduce them to a new composer,” said Cosette Justo Valdés, conductor and artistic director of the symphony.
The concert will feature trumpeter Mark D’Angelo, who will perform Vivian Fung’s Concerto for Trumpet. D’Angelo is the principal trumpet with the Kamloops Symphony and the second trumpet with the Vancouver Island Symphony.
The program will begin with Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro Overture, followed by performances of Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G Major. The symphony describes the program as a blend of classical brilliance and modern innovation, featuring works that continue to inspire and captivate audiences.
According to Justo Valdés, the Vancouver Island Symphony has had a successful season thus far. She highlighted the sell-out success of last month’s Whoever Said Opera is Boring performance.
“We’re gaining new subscribers, new donors, and our audience is definitely growing. Our orchestra is thriving and playing exceptionally well. It’s wonderful to see everything going so well,” she said.
