Earlier this month, Brian May introduced an exquisite 12-string acoustic signature guitar, crafted in collaboration with Gibson. The guitar, a Gibson SJ-200, is everything one would expect from an instrument designed by May. However, there is one feature that stands out, showcasing both beauty and heartfelt significance.
In a video where May discusses the guitar, he revealed a special tribute to Freddie Mercury, etched onto the guitar’s pickguard artwork.
“I believe the best science is done artistically, and the best art is created with an understanding of the universe. Just look at the science behind this guitar,” May explained. “Notice how much technology and craftsmanship have gone into it.”
“They even managed to capture the universe in a figurative way, and right at the center, you can spot the planet Mercury. That’s a small nod to a dear friend of mine.”
“Freddie’s always with me, because he was like a brother. The bond we shared in Queen outlasted all of our marriages. It was a deep, lasting connection. We continue to carry Queen with us, even though Freddie is no longer with us. But now, I have a Mercury on my guitar, and that makes me very happy.”
