Aspiring pianists will gather in the Polish capital for the pre-selection round, set to take place from April 23 to May 4.
Artur Szklener, director of Poland’s National Chopin Institute, the event’s main organizer, announced that the candidates were selected from 642 applicants representing 54 countries. These pianists submitted video recordings for review.
Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw, Szklener highlighted that this marks a record number of applicants, surpassing around 500 in 2021 and 450 in 2015.
China leads the pre-selection round with over 60 participants, followed by South Korea, Japan, Poland, Canada, and Italy. Other countries represented include Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
The pre-selection jury, chaired by Poland’s Wojciech Świtała, comprises Polish and international pianists, including Ludmil Angelov, Nikolai Demidenko, Krzysztof Jabłoński, Kevin Kenner, Marc Laforêt, Alberto Nosè, Piotr Paleczny, Ewa Pobłocka, and Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń.
From this stage, the panel will choose around 80 pianists to compete in the October competition. Some candidates will qualify directly, bypassing pre-selection due to their achievements in other major contests.
Established in 1927, the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious piano competitions.
Past winners include distinguished pianists such as Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick Ohlsson, Krystian Zimerman, Rafał Blechacz, Seong-Jin Cho, and Bruce Liu.
