In a recent interview, Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera expressed his views on the late Jeff Beck’s exceptional guitar skills.
“Without a doubt, Jeff Beck was the best British guitarist ever,” Manzanera said. “He could do things that nobody else could do.”
Manzanera’s statement adds to the ongoing debate about British guitar greatness, which has often revolved around Eric Clapton. His comments come at a time when discussions about the legacy of British guitar icons have gained new relevance, especially following Beck’s passing in January 2023.
The rivalry and camaraderie between Beck and Clapton can be traced back to their early years in the British music scene. Both grew up in Surrey, England, and their careers intersected when Beck replaced Clapton in The Yardbirds in 1965.
Beck reflected on their relationship, admitting, “I know he didn’t like the fact that I took over from him in The Yardbirds, and we did great. I think he was a bit jealous on that front.”
Clapton, however, has spoken highly of Beck’s talent. After hearing Beck play “Shapes of Things,” Clapton reportedly said, “I always tuned in to Jeff, all through my life.”
In a prior conversation with Mike Brunn, Tracii Guns explained why Beck and Clapton should not be compared. Guns noted that while Clapton was groundbreaking in Cream, he became more focused on songwriting in his later career, whereas Beck continued to push the boundaries as a guitarist. Guns believes placing Clapton in the same category as Jeff Beck does a disservice to Beck’s extraordinary abilities.
