Primus released the second episode of their ‘Interstellar Drum Derby’ series on February 27th, continuing the band’s search for a new drummer. This web series highlights the band’s in-person audition process after receiving over 6,100 online submissions to replace Tim “Herb” Alexander. The multi-platinum alternative metal band narrowed the selection to about nine candidates for the final auditions.
The auditions took place in January and were captured on film for the new series. The footage also shows a variety of Primus’ friends, including members from Tool, The Police, and other prominent acts, attending the event.
While John Hoffman ultimately secured the role, Thomas Pridgen—known for his work with Fever 333, ex-The Mars Volta, and Suicidal Tendencies—also took part in the auditions. A highly respected drummer, Pridgen’s performance behind the kit can be seen in the episode.
In addition to Hoffman and Pridgen, the following musicians made it to the final round of auditions:
- Rory Dolan (lespecial)
- Mike Stone
- Stan Bicknell
- Sam Groverman (Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio)
- Nikki Glaspie (The Nth Power, Snarky Puppy)
- Gergo Borlai
- Thomas Lang (stOrk)
