Yamaha Unveils Eco-Friendly Digital Piano ‘Torch T01’ with All-Black Keyboard Made from Recycled African Blackwood

by Madonna

Yamaha has introduced the Torch T01 digital piano, featuring an all-black keyboard made from recycled Grenadilla, also known as African Blackwood. This rare wood, often used in clarinets and oboes, is typically discarded as waste, with around 90% of it being repurposed as fuel. However, Yamaha has found a way to recycle this unused wood, giving it new life in their digital piano.

The keyboard is complemented by wood panels finished with natural oils, which enhance the material’s texture and warmth. The body of the piano and the sides of the accompanying chair are also crafted from African Blackwood, with intricate bark patterns visible on both. The company uses laser engraving technology, often seen in automotive interiors, to add these details to the piano and chair.

Instead of the typical PVC material, the seat of the accompanying chair is made from Hinoki cypress and other natural materials. The edges of both the body and seat are carefully hand-finished, and the volume knob is carved from the same recycled African Blackwood. This thoughtful craftsmanship ensures that the piano and chair are not only visually appealing but also environmentally conscious.

The natural material of the keyboard means that its color will evolve over time, influenced by factors such as temperature, humidity, and environmental conditions. Users can opt for a waxed finish for a glossy effect, which will enhance the natural patina that develops as the wood ages.

The innovative design of the Torch T01 digital piano uses a special wood flow-molding technology, which shapes the African Blackwood into various parts of the piano while preserving its natural acoustics. This method allows Yamaha to maintain the inherent properties of the wood, ensuring that the sound remains rich and resonant.

As part of their commitment to reducing environmental impact, Yamaha has avoided using PVC sheets for the exterior. Instead, the team relies on natural oils to finish the hand-crafted components. The result is a digital piano that is 70% made from African Blackwood, with a resin compound that ensures smooth playability. The keys’ absorbent nature allows fingers to glide effortlessly, offering a tactile playing experience similar to that of traditional pianos.

The Torch T01 digital piano, with its all-black keyboard and sustainable design, is set to be released in April 2025.
