Aly James Lab VProm 3.0 Update Adds EPROM Burner and Enhanced Features for Drum Machine Enthusiasts

by Madonna

The Aly James Lab VProm plugin, which emulates the classic LM-1 drum machine, has just received an exciting new update. Originally released in 2014, VProm gained a dedicated following due to its accurate variable sample rate emulation of classic DACs and its ability to load swappable EPROM samples. Now, with the release of VProm 3.0, users can enjoy even more powerful features, including the ability to burn their own EPROMs for both hardware and software drum machines.

The standout addition in VProm 3.0 is the built-in EPROM burner. This feature allows users to generate custom EPROM binary files directly within the plugin, eliminating the need for external tools. These EPROMs can then be used in VProm itself or in hardware drum machines that rely on EPROM samples. To create an EPROM, users simply import a .wav file and sample it using the plugin’s R2R ADC emulation, which captures the sample at around 27kHz. Afterward, they can preview the sample with µLaw 8-bit compression or save it as a µLaw-encoded .bin EPROM file.

In addition to the EPROM burner, VProm 3.0 introduces several other noteworthy features. A custom EPROM manager is now included, allowing for easier management of EPROMs, along with real-time µLaw DAC curve response control. This control can function as a transient shaper or distortion unit when pushed hard. Users can also adjust the sample start, length, and loop modes with advanced EPROM playback controls, while the updated mixer now includes three routing modes.

For those seeking a more authentic vintage feel, VProm 3.0 features a new 48-PPQN internal clock that syncs to your DAW tempo, as well as real-time clock drift to replicate the imperfect timing of old drum machines. The plugin’s circuit emulation has also been enhanced, with improvements to DMX voice card features such as VCA and filter tracking, and upgraded voltage-controlled CEM filters that offer additional control over trim, decay, pulse time, and envelope response.

Other enhancements include a new drum voice, new master controls, a new velocity mode, enhanced oversampling, dynamic tuning on some drum sounds, and a new EPROM Kit format that allows users to save kits separately from general presets. These additions further solidify VProm 3.0 as a comprehensive and powerful tool for those serious about sample-based drum machine emulations.

Aly James Lab VProm 3.0 is available for €56, with a €20 upgrade discount for existing users. Those who purchased VProm 2.0 after December 2024 can upgrade for just €10. The plugin is compatible with both Apple silicon and Windows, and is available in VST3 and AU formats.
