Primus has started releasing videos from their drum auditions, which they first announced late last year after longtime drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander’s departure. While Josh Hoffman ultimately landed the job, the band is showcasing some of the standout auditions in a series called Interstellar Drum Derby. Episode one features Rory Dolan, the drummer from lespecial.
In November 2024, Primus opened up the audition process, inviting video submissions from aspiring drummers. After receiving 6,100 entries, bassist Les Claypool and guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde narrowed down the field and brought select players in for in-person auditions.
Following Josh Hoffman’s announcement as the new drummer earlier this month, the band is now sharing some of the notable auditions, starting with Rory Dolan. The first episode of Interstellar Drum Derby kicks off with a comedic sketch featuring drummer/comedian/actor Fred Armisen, who pretends to audition but humorously criticizes Claypool, calling him a “diva” in the process.
Rory Dolan is then introduced, sharing his journey of becoming a Primus fan as a teenager. In 2021, lespecial paid tribute to the band with a livestream concert, performing Primus’ 1990 album Frizzle Fry. As Rory’s audition begins, Les asks him if he’s nervous, to which he confidently responds, “no.”
“You should be fucking extremely nervous,” Claypool jokingly retorts.
The audition heats up with an open jam, followed by performances of Primus tracks, including “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers” and a cut from Frizzle Fry. Les and Ler sit down afterward to discuss Rory’s performance and audition.
