The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France has announced the appointment of British violinist Savitri Grier as its new Principal Second Violin.
Grier, a graduate of the University of Oxford, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Universität der Künste Berlin, has studied under prominent teachers such as David Takeno and Nora Chastain.
Born and raised in London, Grier is a founding member of the renowned Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, a British ensemble currently serving as Associate Artists at the Wigmore Hall. The group’s 2022 album featuring music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor garnered critical acclaim.
In recent years, Grier has held principal violin roles with prestigious orchestras across Europe, including the Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. She has also served as Guest Leader for the Orchestre de Paris, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and the Orchestre National d’Île de France.
As a soloist, Grier has performed with notable ensembles such as the Qatar Philharmonic, Concerto Budapest, Royal Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, English Chamber, London Mozart Players, and the Welsh National Opera. In 2019, she completed a residency at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where she performed the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas with pianist Richard Uttley.
Grier is also passionate about cross-cultural music collaboration. She has worked with sarod virtuosos Amaan Ali and Ayaan Ali Bangash at The Times Swarsangam Music Festival in Bangalore, India. Additionally, she has led a British Council chamber project in Qatar, performed recitals in China, and collaborated with a youth orchestra in Balanyá, Guatemala.
