What started as a VIP experience with the band Chicago has evolved into an exciting opportunity for students at local high schools and Terra State Community College to learn the art of musical recording.
On Wednesday, percussionist Walfredo Reyes Jr., known for his work with Chicago, will host a drum recording workshop at Terra State Community College’s Recital Hall (D122). This rare event offers a chance to learn from one of the most respected drummers in the industry.
Brennan Willis, the Director of Music and Technology at Terra State, shared details about the unique session. “It’s going to be a large recording session with 60 sets of headphones,” Willis explained. “He’ll be bringing his Chicago tracks to work with.”
The journey began back in November 2024 when 21 students and staff members from Terra State’s Music Department were treated to a special concert experience. Local musician Galen Arnold sponsored tickets for the group to see Chicago perform at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo.
Reyes, a drummer Willis follows on Instagram, was a key part of the surprise. “It all came together quickly,” Willis said. “I sent him a message, and he responded right away.”
Reyes went above and beyond, giving the students VIP access to the show, which included a meet-and-greet with the band, exclusive behind-the-scenes access, and a photo opportunity. Prior to the concert, Reyes shared valuable insights with the students, discussing stage production and offering career advice from his experiences performing with legends like Carlos Santana, Christina Aguilera, and Lindsey Buckingham.
“Having Walfredo connect with our students at the concert was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Willis noted. “His generosity and passion for teaching made a lasting impact. Little did we know that experience would lead to him coming to Terra State to host a workshop!”
The upcoming workshop will focus on drum recording techniques. Attendees will gain hands-on knowledge from Reyes, who will share his vast experience in studio recording and touring. The interactive session will provide valuable insights into the professional challenges of capturing the perfect drum sound.
Willis highlighted that the event benefits not only the students but also the college’s music program. Several donations, including one from the Fostoria Eagles #430, helped cover the technical equipment costs, contributing to the college’s growth.
“We were able to secure funds for the equipment needed, which also gave our program a significant boost,” Willis said. “It’s a win-win.”
“Typically, events like this end when they’re over, but we hope this will leave a lasting impact and pave the way for future opportunities,” Willis added. “It sets us up for a brighter future.”
