To mark over 130 years of music history, iconic instrument brand Gibson has partnered with Sir Brian May, co-founder of the legendary band Queen, to unveil the Brian May SJ-200 12-string acoustic guitar. This limited-edition model, developed in close collaboration with May, will see only 100 units produced worldwide. Available exclusively through Gibson.com, the Gibson Garage in Nashville and London, and authorized Gibson dealers, the guitar is a true collector’s item.
Brian May explained the inspiration behind the design: “The idea for this guitar came when I needed a 12-string on tour, and the one I was using wasn’t performing well on stage. The folks at Gibson kindly said, ‘We’ll make you something special for your tours.’ One thing I requested was to reverse the usual octaves because I like to pick upwards and hear the top notes first. It allows me to play melodies more easily. This guitar not only looks beautiful but also sounds incredible, with a lot of technology and craftsmanship behind it. It’s like the universe is on this guitar, with a little nod to Mercury, a friend of mine who’s always with me.”
Gibson’s CEO, Cesar Gueikian, expressed his excitement about the collaboration: “Brian’s influence on music and culture is unparalleled, and his impact on my own musical journey is immeasurable. It’s an honor to work with him on this SJ-200 12-string guitar, and we are thrilled to share it with music lovers around the world.”
The Brian May SJ-200 12-string honors May’s contributions to rock music and his passion for astronomy. After becoming a legendary guitarist for Queen, May earned a PhD in astrophysics in 2007, balancing his scientific studies with his iconic musical career.
The SJ-200 in 12-string form is a rare instrument, made even more unique by the customizations for May. It features premium materials, including AAA rosewood back and sides, a AAA Sitka spruce top in a Vintage Sunburst finish, and a 2-piece AAA maple neck with a rounded profile and walnut stringer. The rosewood fretboard boasts agoya shell 8-point star inlays, and the headstock features a stunning 8-point agoya shell star inlay along with a Gibson logo in mother-of-pearl. The solid rosewood moustache bridge is decorated with ’60s-style agoya inlays.
May’s love of astronomy is reflected in the planetary-themed pickguard he designed, which enhances the guitar’s celestial motif. Additionally, the strings are mounted in reverse order—thicker strings on top, followed by octave strings—creating a unique sound. Fishman Matrix electronics ensure the guitar is stage and studio-ready from the moment it’s taken out of the included hardshell case.
Handcrafted by expert luthiers at Gibson’s Custom Shop in Bozeman, Montana, the Brian May SJ-200 12-string guitar is an exceptional instrument for both collectors and players.
Last fall, Queen also released the “Queen I Collector’s Edition” box set, which includes remixed and remastered versions of their groundbreaking 1973 debut album, “Queen.” This box set features 63 tracks, 43 brand new mixes, rare live recordings, and previously unheard material from the band’s first-ever live performance in London in August 1970. The release is accompanied by a 108-page book with handwritten lyrics and memorabilia.
