“I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing,” Weller wrote, reflecting on their early days together. “I’m thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking. To all the pubs and clubs we played at as kids, to eventually making a record. What a journey.” Weller continued by sharing a series of black-and-white photos of Buckler, adding, “We went far beyond our dreams, and what we made stands the test of time. Rick was a good guy and a great drummer whose innovative drum patterns helped shape our songs. I’m glad we had the chance to work together as much as we did. My thoughts are with [Rick’s wife Lesley] and his family during this difficult time.”

While the cause of death has not been disclosed, the announcement comes just two weeks after Buckler canceled a spoken-word tour due to ongoing health issues, according to TMZ.

Formed in 1972 in Woking, Surrey, The Jam became a powerful force in British rock. Buckler was part of the original lineup, contributing his drumming talents to the band’s debut single, “In the City,” in 1977, which was followed by their debut album of the same name. Known for their politically charged music, The Jam made waves with songs that addressed police brutality, the British government, and social issues.

The band released six albums during their career, with their final project, The Gift (1982), peaking at No. 82 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. After a world tour promoting the album, The Jam disbanded due to Weller’s decision to move on from the group.

Following The Jam, Buckler went on to form Time UK with Jimmy Edwards and Ray Simone, and later created The Gift, a tribute band dedicated to his former band.

Rick Buckler’s contributions to music, particularly through his innovative drumming, will remain a lasting influence on fans and musicians alike.
