Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, known for his forward-thinking approach, is not one to dwell on the past. While the 1969 single “Living in the Past” may suggest otherwise, Anderson is more focused on the future, as evidenced by the three new Tull albums he’s released since early 2022, including the upcoming Curious Ruminant, set for release on March 7.
However, the singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and band leader took a moment to reflect on the albums that shaped his life. Speaking via Zoom, Anderson shared, “I can always think of 10 albums like that. Unfortunately, the majority of them are from the ’60s, the ’70s, and a little into the ’80s.”
He continued, “Generally, the formative years in your teens and 20s are when you experience the most monumental music that influences your early career, or even before you’ve started it. Those are the albums that have the biggest impact.”
As he gets older, Anderson finds that these albums hold even more significance. “I think they mean more to me now than they did back then,” he said. “It’s not just historical recounting anymore; I speak about them with genuine enthusiasm, recalling those great moments that truly meant a lot to me.”
True to form, Anderson’s list of influential albums is diverse, with some unexpected choices, proving once again that the man behind Thick as a Brick, “Bungle in the Jungle,” Songs from the Wood, and countless other classics is anything but predictable.
