An 11-year-old boy from Cornwall has completed a 12-hour drum marathon to raise funds for local cancer charities.
Jack, who began drumming at Humphry Davy School in Penzance at 07:00 GMT, was joined by dozens of fellow music students throughout the day, performing live on stage.
Jack’s mother, Dawn Cooper, is currently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, and he wanted to support the charities that have been instrumental in helping her through her treatment.
His music teacher praised his efforts, saying: “What a fantastic example to those facing difficult times, showing how to channel positive energy in the face of adversity.”
Dawn Cooper shared her thoughts, saying: “The past five months of chemotherapy have been tough. The good news is that my final round of treatment is just a week away, but it’s been a challenging time for our family. When Jack came up with the idea, I was speechless. I’m so proud of him for turning something that’s been so hard for us into something so positive. We’re grateful for the incredible care from everyone at The Royal Cornwall Hospital.”
Jack himself explained: “It’s been a tough few months, but drumming is my happy place, and it’s really helped me. So, this seemed like a good way to give back.”
Jack’s efforts even caught the attention of a rock star, who sent a special message of encouragement. Alexis Nunez, drummer for The Kooks, shared a video, saying: “What you’re doing is fantastic. I wish you all the best—you’re such an amazing person. I did a 12-hour drum session during the pandemic for the NHS, and I know you’re going to smash it. Well done!”
Matt Street, Jack’s music teacher, also expressed his pride, noting that four school bands performed alongside Jack to support his marathon drumming session.
“It’s incredibly inspiring not only because Jack is doing this to support his mum, but also because so many of our students know someone affected by cancer,” said Street. “It’s exciting to see the enthusiasm build, especially as we’re playing a lot of Jack’s favourite band, Tool.”
All funds raised will go to the Sunrise Centre, part of the oncology department at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust, and the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity, which supports small comforts for cancer patients during their treatment.
