Before Kendrick Lamar and SZA take the stage for the highly anticipated Halftime Show at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome, Jon Batiste captivated the crowd with a soulful rendition of the National Anthem.
The seven-time Grammy winner delivered a memorable and unique performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of Super Bowl LIX, combining respect for the anthem’s tradition with his own distinctive style.
Seated at a white grand piano adorned with multicolored designs, Batiste brought a bluesy and jazzy twist to the anthem while maintaining its classic structure. As he played, he added subtle piano flourishes, building up to a final jazzy vamp where he elongated the phrase “land of the free” with soulful, extended vocals.
The performance, filled with Batiste’s signature musicality, perfectly suited the New Orleans vibe of the event, setting a festive tone for the game to follow.
A Metairie, Louisiana native—just outside New Orleans—Batiste’s performance was especially significant as a homecoming moment. He is widely recognized for his nearly ten-year tenure as the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
This performance of the National Anthem marks Jon Batiste’s Super Bowl debut as a performer, and it certainly left an indelible mark on the audience.
