COA to Host Japanese Drumming Group Taikoza on Feb. 22

by Madonna

The Performing Arts Center (PAC) will present a performance by Taikoza, a renowned taiko drumming group, on Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Led by director Marco Lienhard, the group showcases traditional Japanese drumming along with the melodies of bamboo flutes.

The term “Taiko” translates to “big drums,” which is a defining feature of Taikoza’s performances. According to the group’s website, their shows are known for “big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy.” Taikoza draws from Japan’s rich musical traditions to create a highly visual and engaging performance, enhanced by colorful traditional costumes and dynamic movement.

In addition to an array of drums, Taikoza incorporates the shakuhachi and fue, both bamboo flutes, as well as vibrant dance elements into their shows.

Their performances have graced prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, Suntory Hall, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Hall, Osaka Festival Hall, Lincoln Center, Mount Fuji, the Miyajima Temple, and Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Hall.

The show at COA will run for 90 minutes, including an intermission.
