Punk rock icon Marky Ramone is set to make his way to New Jersey this Friday, bringing his legendary drumming skills to support a meaningful cause.
The drummer of the Ramones, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, will appear at a charity event in support of a cause close to his heart — his longtime manager Harvey Leeds.
Ramone, born Marc Steven Bell in Brooklyn, became part of the Ramones in 1978 and is one of the few surviving original members of the band. He will be at New Concepts for Living, a Paramus center dedicated to supporting adults with disabilities, for the fundraising event.
The 72-year-old drummer’s involvement with New Concepts stems from his relationship with Leeds, who lives in Haworth. Leeds’ daughter, Annie, who has Rett syndrome, attends New Concepts’ day program. The event will help raise funds for this vital program.
During the event, Ramone will perform a drumming demonstration, share rare Ramones videos and photos, and participate in a Q&A session. A charity auction will also take place, featuring items such as Ramone’s unique drumhead art and a studio session with the punk legend himself.
“Harvey’s advocacy for his daughter and others with special needs is truly inspiring, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to support such an important cause,” Ramone said in a statement shared with NJ Advance Media. “This is a chance to use music to come together, make a difference, and celebrate a community that deserves all the care, attention, and respect in the world.”
Ramone, who now performs with his band Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg, continues to stay active in the punk scene, hosting the Marky Ramone’s 1st Wave Blitzkrieg show on SiriusXM’s 1st Wave channel and the Marky Ramone’s Punk Rock Blitzkrieg channel, heard 24/7.
The Ramones, known for their profound influence on punk rock, were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Sadly, all original members of the band — Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, and Tommy Ramone — have passed away.
