After dedicating himself to composition, former prog rocker Lewis Gill from Latchford, Warrington, is celebrating a major milestone: his first solo piano composition has been performed by the esteemed virtuoso Fidan Aghayeva-Edler in Berlin.
At 56, Lewis Gill has been immersed in music since the late 1980s, initially as a guitarist before fully transitioning to composition in mid-2023. His latest achievement marks a significant step in his new journey as an avant-garde composer.
Gill recently completed his first solo piano piece and sought a pianist to bring it to life. He was introduced to Fidan Aghayeva-Edler through Turkish composer Turgut Erçetin. After reaching out to Aghayeva-Edler via her website, he sent her the score along with some background information about himself.
“Three days later, I received an email from Fidan saying she liked the piece and would perform it in a professional setting, with great filming and recording,” Gill said. “I was thrilled and asked her to send me a video of the performance once it was done. True to her word, she did!”
Lewis expressed his delight with Aghayeva-Edler’s interpretation of his work, adding, “I’m absolutely delighted with her performance, and I’ll be sending her more of my piano music in the future for hopefully more performances.”
Fidan Aghayeva-Edler, originally from Baku, Azerbaijan, is renowned for her interpretations of modern and contemporary music. She has developed a deep affinity for the works of composers like Ludwig van Beethoven and Claude Debussy.
